Pursuing higher education can be daunting and arduous for low-income students in Texas. Recent statistics show that only 29% of these students enroll in college, compared to 54% of their higher-income peers. On top of that, financial barriers like college entry fees and securing financial aid make it even harder for them.

Why It Matters
In today's economy, there is an increasing demand for skilled workers in trades such as plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of skilled trades workers is projected to grow 4 percent from 2019 to 2029. However, there is a shortage of workers in these fields. Currently, there are more job openings than there are workers to fill them. This shortage can increase wages and better job security for those pursuing trade careers.
